Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: The Tavistock Model

Presented by Tricia Coleman

Registration Fee: Please select the fee level that best reflects your current circumstances.

This scientific program on couple psychoanalytic psychotherapy follows the model as conceptualised and used clinically in the work with couples developed over many years at Tavistock Relationships, London. The emphasis in couple psychoanalytic psychotherapy is on what is shared between the couple and how they externalise their inner worlds of early relationships in the present relationship and in the consutling room. The therapist, through their ability to maintain a “couple state of mind” can begin to understand a couple’s particular relationship through projections, anxieties, defenses and unconcious phantasies.

About the Speaker

Tricia Coleman was born and raised in Virginia and has lived in London for more than 20 years. While in London she first completed a psychoanalytic training in couple psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Tavistock Marital Studies Institute, now Tavistock Relationships. Following the British model of completing a training course, she qualified to practice as a Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. She was also a visiting lecturer on couple psychoanalytic traning at the Tavistock, as well as a tutor and supervisor of the course. Following her time at the Tavistock, Coleman studied at the British Psychoanalytic Association (BPA), where she qualified to practice as a Psychoanalyst.

Currently she continues to hold her memberships in the BPA, the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA), and the European Psychoanalytic Federation (EPF). She is a clinical member of APsA and a member of the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas (PCC). Tricia is committed to the theory and practice of psychoanalysis through clinical work with individuals and couples, teaching, and professional service.

After this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Examine and begin to conceptualize psychoanalytic ideas and theory as applied to Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

  2. Examine the differences between their own method of working and the Tavistock Model of working with couples psychoanalytically.

  3. Begin to apply Couple Psychoanalytic concepts to couple practice.

This program is intended for mental health clinicians and psychoanalysts at the intermediate to advanced level.
